Cape Town - A couple who roamed the streets of Woodstock for several years, have been found murdered.
The pair were killed on Monday night after an argument ensued with four suspects – three men and a woman, who fled after the murders.
Community activist, Shamiel Abbs, said he was at the scene just a few minutes after the incident.
“I was at the scene but I couldn’t identify the victims while I was there and I only heard after that it was the couple that used to sleep outside Shoprite.
“Witnesses said there had been an argument between the victims and the suspects.
“The victims ran into Dublin Mews but there was no way through and they came back out and the suspects chased them and four shots were fired.
“They had a lot of blood on their faces. Any loss of life in our area is very sad. Who would want to do that to them when they wouldn’t harm anyone.”
Abbs said he did not suspect the murder to be gang-related.
“I understand that the community is still shocked and they are worried that there will be a flare-up after two years, and then we will get shootings all over Woodstock.
“I just want people to remain calm and understand that this was not related to gangsterism.”
Police spokesperson, Joseph Swartbooi, said: “Woodstock police are hard at work following-up on leads in a bid to apprehend the suspects who are responsible for the death of a male and a female in Woodstock. According to reports, unknown gunmen opened fire on the victims in Dublin Street, fatally wounding both victims aged 32 and 37 respectively. The motive for this double murder is yet to be determined. Woodstock police are investigating two counts of murder.”
