Cape Town - Beaches along Gordon’s Bay will soon have vibrant murals on display, courtesy of several young Helderberg artists.

The colourful drawings of 12 painters from various Helderberg communities will be displayed for everyone to see along beach walls. It has been made possible through a project launched earlier this year by ward councillor Sean Stacey.

Stacey said the project was initiated to empower youths and showcase their talents.

“I’m thrilled to see it come to life. The other aspect of initiating the project was to try to attract more tourist activity in the ward, which I’m sure these murals will do,” he said.

The painters are in Grades 1 to 3 and residents of ward 100, while applicants from other areas of Helderberg were also welcomed.

“I want to have more tourists visit Gordon’s Bay instead of St James and Muizenberg. More tourists equals more money for local businesses, restaurants, guest houses, hotels and shops,” Stacey said.

Painting is expected to get under way during the first weekend in September, but will depend on the weather.

Stacey added: “I wouldn’t have been able to execute this without you. I'm looking forward to the ‘big painting day’ and seeing the murals bring our community even closer together.

“Let’s continue to nurture creativity and make Gordon’s Bay an even more beautiful place to live and visit.”

The artworks will feature at several locations around Gordon’s Bay, primarily at the harbour and beach area.

The Gordon’s Bay Residents Association expressed its pride at being associated with the initiative that gives young people power.

Association chairperson Edwina Hadfield said that the project has involved various organisations to ensure its success.

“It has been a fabulous journey of engaging and encouraging the youth to enter.

“We look forward to the day they get to put their murals on the walls and get painting under the guidance of local artists,” she said.
