Described as incredibly gifted, Ruben Jansen, who performed on some of the world’s top breakdancing stages, was on a journey to make his dreams come true when his life was cut short during a shooting in Eerste River.

A matric pupil from Apex High School, Jansen had also been training as a sea cadet.

His promising future was on display on world stages after he competed in breakdancing on international stages such as in Poland last year where he participated in the International Dance Organisation championships.

He was declared dead on the scene of the shooting on Sunday night while two more people were wounded.

Police spokesperson Wesley Twigg said: "Kleinvlei police responded to a complaint of a shooting.

“On arrival they found the victims with gunshot wounds.

“The 20-year-old victim was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel while the other victims were taken to a medical facility for treatment.

The motive for the attack is yet to be established.”

Jansen’s family requested space and privacy as they dealt with their grief and loss.

“Ruben was incredibly gifted and inspired all of us through his love for dance and his passion for breaking,” the family said in a statement.

“A gift that allowed him to travel the country and amazingly travel the world. This was something we are so proud he got to experience and will serve as an inspiration for many ... We are forever grateful for the impact Ruben has had on all of us.

“As we try to come to terms with this sudden loss we ask for the space and privacy we need to mourn as a family.

Together we shall find love and peace,” the family said.

South African Sea Cadets's Lieutenant Noel Dreyer said Jansen joined the cadets at age 12. He was at the TS Woltemade until he matriculated.

He served at TS Birkenhead in 2022 as an officer and returned again to TS Woltemade in 2023. Dreyer conveyed his condolences to Jansen’s family.

Apex High School posted a moving tribute, describing Jansen as more than just a student.

“He was a beacon of dedication, talent and friendship.

“A gifted dancer, Ruben’s passion and hard work took him to stages across the globe where he proudly represented our country.

“His unwavering discipline was not only evident in his art but also in his commitment as a sea cadet with TS Birkenhead in Hawston,” the school said.
