About 100 sex workers were recently treated to a day of pampering during a charity event organised by the Victory Outreach Church in Goodwood.
Church spokesperson Priscilla Gonzalez said: “This event specifically reached out to a special group which we prefer to call ‘Twilights Treasures’, who are women living in especially difficult situations that oftentimes find themselves at night doing the unmentionable.
“While others see women of the night, prostitutes, drug addicts, homeless, criminals, rejects of society and so on, we see a bright future for these special women. We served nearly 100 women for free. Taking time to pamper them (by doing their) hair, nails and make-up as well as (offering) a full-course meal and an eventful agenda that included women who were also previously sex workers … Everywhere you looked you saw teary eyes, big smiles and grateful hearts.”
Volunteers came from throughout the city to help with the pampering and they food and other things to treat the women for the day.
The group of volunteers includes the likes of professional hairdressers, beauticians, caterers, decorators and church members to make the day possible on August 30.
One of the volunteers, Charlveline, who had been a sex worker for 10 years, said: “I serve because I never had this type of love; I’m receiving so much support. I thought I was nothing but God sent Victory Outreach on my path to show me I am something.”
Beautician Mapule, from Pulelady Beauty Bar, said: “As a beautician I believe that when a woman looks beautiful, they feel beautiful and they begin to act beautiful. I volunteered to plant back into the community, not only as a beautician but I believe that there is someone that created beauty, and that is Jesus. He makes things beautiful, including changing lives for good. I’m so blessed to be part of Victory Outreach that is reaching out to all the ‘twilights’ and lost souls.”
Kelly, from small business Balloon Girly, said: “I wanted them to see we made it nice, especially for them, so that they’d be able to take pictures after they were done at the hair, nails and make-up stations.”
