Cape Town - A warrant of arrest has been issued for suspended ANC MPL Danville Smith after he failed to appear in court on Thursday.

Embattled Smith, who served in the provincial legislature and as the party’s West Coast regional treasurer, was suspended in June following his arrest earlier this year on theft of motor vehicle and fraud charges, along with two foreign nationals.

The three men are accused of allegedly conning a man by pretending to pay R210 000 for a vehicle purchase via Gumtree.

The warrant has been issued in relation to a separate case Smith faces alongside another accused, where they allegedly pocketed R25 000 after submitting a dodgy food parcel invoice meant for a Mandela Day event.

NPA spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila said: “A warrant of arrest has been issued for Danville Smith after he failed to appear in court yesterday (Thursday).

“A warrant of arrest for his co-accused, Peter Blackenberg, was held over as he had a medical certificate.”

Blackenberg is a District Committee member of Ward 5 in Lamberts Bay, employed by the Clanwilliam Municipality.

The pair are charged with corruption, fraud and contravention of the Municipal Finance Management Act.

The case was postponed until September 5, 2022.

Last year Smith faced corruption charges and was released on a warning.
