eThekwini Municipality halfway done with repairs to wastewater pump stations impacting beaches and rivers

Durban — The eThekwini Municipality has indicated that repairs to wastewater pump stations impacting beaches and rivers are halfway complete.

This means that of the 12 pump stations that require repairs, six have been completed, and repairs are under way at the other six.

The information is as of Tuesday, December 13, 2022.

The municipality also indicated that all repairs are expected to be completed by the end of the month.

Repairs are completed at the following pump stations:

  1. Kingsway 2
  2. Ellcock
  3. Athlone Drive
  4. Laguna Beach
  5. Ohlanga
  6. Westbrook

Repairs are ongoing at the following pump stations:

  1. Johana Road
  2. Temple Road
  3. Canelanes 1,2,3
  4. Wick Street
  5. Star Street
  6. Amstrong

At Johana Road pump station, mechanical and electrical repairs are complete but are awaiting the re-instalment of electricity.

Temple Road pump station is awaiting the delivery of mechanical spares.

At Canelanes 1, 2, 3, pump stations, new panels, and pumps are to be procured.

At Wick Street pump station, the kiosk and fencing were washed away. A new panel has been procured and built.

Then, at the Star Street pump station, the MCC panel and pumps are to be repaired.

The outstanding pump stations are impacting on the Umgeni River, central, Umdloti, Westbrook and La Mercy beaches.

eThekwini Municipality mayor Mxolisi Kaunda announced that a budget of more than R250 million had been allocated to repair sewer infrastructure.

The municipality was finalising the procurement process for the repair of their sanitation infrastructure that was damaged by the floods.

“We are pleased to report that the municipality has finalised this process, and a budget of over R250m has been set aside to repair sewer infrastructure.”

“We also want to indicate that contractors have been appointed to fix sewer pipes that were damaged by the floods in all four regions of the municipality. These repairs include all pipework responsible for bringing the sewerage to various treatment works,” Kaunda said.
