Durban — People have expressed disbelief that a 10-year-old girl hung herself in Phoenix on Friday.

KZN VIP spokesperson Gareth Naidoo said a 10-year-old girl was killed in an alleged suicide in Phoenix on Friday afternoon.

Naidoo said KZN VIP emergency response teams were dispatched to the scene where a 10-year-old girl was found hanging from a material which was tied to the ceiling rafter.

“Sadly, nothing could be done to save the child's life, and she was declared deceased by VIP medics,” Naidoo said.

He said the circumstances behind the incident were unconfirmed, but the scene was handed over to the police for investigation.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Nqobile Gwala said: “An inquest docket was being investigated by Phoenix SAPS after the body of a ten-year-old female was found hanging inside the house at Stonebridge in Phoenix.”

“The circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated,” Gwala said.

Commenting on the incident posted on Facebook, people were not convinced that a 10-year-old was able to take her own life in the manner that she is alleged to have.

Louis Govender said: “... I am not convinced that this child could commit suicide, a thorough investigation and forensic analysis must be done, something sinister about this case.”

Kelisha Naidoo said: “Proper investigations need to be done. My house is built the exact same way, as we live in the same area. Those who are in the Phoenix area living in a duplex can relate when I say this statement. I'm a grown adult. I may be short. But if I climbed onto my bed or even on the chair or used the frame of my window, I would not be able to reach the raft of the ceiling. This makes no sense. For someone so little and precious to take her life. My heart is truly broken to read this. Rest well my angel.”

Keldon Reece Govindasami said to the people of the Indian community that mental health matters for children, adults and seniors.

“Stop putting people down just because they are different from the norms!!! I don't know the story behind HER death but for a 10-year-old to take her own life, that's just sad. Rest in peace little one.”

Preta Mona Kanan said that those who are parents will know that something here isn't right. How would a 10-year-old be able to reach the ceiling? This time the ones responsible need to be punished. The law just believes that they have a mental illness and sends them to some mental hospital and they still live. Yet a soul that never got to see or experience life has been taken away! Where were the parents?

Collin George said: “Something doesn't add up here. A thorough investigation must be conducted by the authorities in order to get to the bottom of this matter. Go well and rest well my little angel.”

Anastasia Naidoo said: “RIP my angel. I knew this child, she used to come to play with my sister and have meals together. It breaks my heart as a mother and having a sister the same age, Jesus please give those people who are investigating this case find the excuse for a person who did this, I don't believe for a second this child did this to herself.”

Resheka Nohor questioned how it was possible for a 10-year-old to get up there and tie a rope.
