Durban - eThekwini Municipality mayor Mxolisi Kaunda said that their investigation revealed that two sewer pump stations in the area contributed to the sewage spillage.

Addressing the issue of dozens of dead fish found in Isipingo Beach Lagoon recently, Kaunda said the city had conducted an investigation to ascertain the cause of the pollution.

Investigations revealed that there were two sewer pump stations that were affected in the area, contributing to the sewage spillage.

“We are pleased to report that these two pumps have been repaired and installed. Our pollution control team has been able to remove most of the dead fish and the clean-up operation is in progress. The team will continue to monitor the water quality through sampling and field surveys. We want to apologise to the public for any inconvenience caused because of this incident,” Kaunda said.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday DA councillors started their two-day oversight visits to some of the areas where sewage spills have been occurring due to ageing infrastructure and poor maintenance by the municipality.

The DA said there have been growing reports of people falling sick due to contaminated water, as well as a significantly negative environmental impact on rivers and marine life.
