Durban — Phoenix police are investigating a case of attempted murder after a man was shot by unknown suspects in the Phoenix policing area.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Nqobile Gwala said: “It is alleged that on October 17, 2022, at 5pm, a 32-year-old victim was shot by unknown suspects whilst on Cotmore Place in Phoenix. A case of attempted murder was opened at Phoenix for investigation.”

According to the CCTV footage, the incident happened on Monday afternoon, around 5pm.

In a 25-second video circulating on social media, two vehicles, a Mercedes-Benz and BMW, are seen in the middle of a small street in the Sunford area in Phoenix, north of Durban.

The Mercedes-Benz appears to be reversing into a driveway while the BMW waited on the road.

Within seconds, a passenger of the BMW disembarks and starts shooting towards the Mercedes-Benz while the driver of the latter reverses faster into the driveway.

The gunman runs towards the Mercedes-Benz, still shooting, while the driver of the BMW follows slowly behind.

While still shooting, one of the dogs appears to attempt to bite the gunman’s firing hand but fails.

The driver of the Mercedes-Benz then drives out of the driveway and onto the street while the gunman continues shooting.

During the incident, while the gunman fires, another dog is run over by the Mercedes-Benz, but once the car stops, the dog manages to move out from under the tyre.

Eventually, the gunman stops firing and gets into the BMW, which flees the scene.

An unknown man is heard speaking over the video and says that “two of them were shooting”.

He also says, “can’t see the registration, right?”

Another says, “he knocked the dogs”.

KZN VIP spokesperson Gareth Naidoo said there was a B.O.L.O. (be on the lookout) on a drive-by shooting in the Sunford area in Phoenix.

“Silver BMW with two Indian male occupants/suspects,” Naidoo said.

He said that anyone with details must call 10111 or KZN VIP on 031 502 3456

According to more information received by the Daily News, the victim is alleged to be 45 years old.

“The victim sustained three gunshot wounds to his abdomen, lower leg and thigh,” the information read.

It said that the victim’s wife was contacted, and she confirmed that the victim was in stable condition at the entitled hospital.

“According to video footage viewed, the suspect used a pistol to fire at the victim. Suspects are unknown at this stage. No arrests made.”
