Durban — With less than two weeks before the ANC branches wrapped up nominations, Dr Zweli Mkhize’s supporters in KwaZulu-Natal are getting a nod for the all-powerful national executive committee.

Some of the members who have received nominations from various provinces are Lucky Moloi, who is the husband of the Agriculture MEC Bongi Sithole, and Mkhize’s chief lobbyist Siphiwe Blose. The two are topping the list in the branches and regions that have nominated Mkhize for the presidency.

Blose said he and Moloi were getting nominations across the country from branches and regions that had nominated them along with Mkhize. He said so far Mkhize’s campaign was doing very well outside his province but branches felt his supporters must also be in the NEC to strengthen his base in the decision-making structure between conferences.

“We want to get as many of Mkhize’s supporters as possible in the NEC to strengthen his presidency. For the president to be able to command the movement he must have enough support in the NEC so it is very important that we swell the NEC to prevent him from being a lame duck leader,” said Blose.

Moloi, who lost the Inkosi Bhambatha regional chairperson contest to a faction that was aligned to Ramaphosa is a known backer of Mkhize and his own branch in the Nquthu sub-region has nominated Mkhize for president as well as him for the NEC position. He has also received various nominations from Gauteng, Limpopo and Eastern Cape branches.

He confirmed his availability, saying if branches wanted him to serve in the NEC he would not turn down their wishes. Moloi is currently a caucus leader of the council at Nquthu Local Municipality and had been a party regional chairperson.
