Durban — Phoenix Child Welfare (PCW) has urged the public to help them alleviate poverty by donating cans of non-perishable food for their ONE CAN initiative.
The goal is to collect 5 000 cans by December 6. According to the PCW there is little hope and hunger is an all-too-common reality in Phoenix. The PCW remains committed to being a beacon of support for children and families facing the crushing weight of poverty.
However, as the challenges grow, so does the urgent need for collective action. The PCW is reaching out to schools, businesses and institutions to donate to the ONE CAN initiative.
Their proposition is simple: if one person could contribute ONE CAN of non-perishable food, you could make a difference.
“Each can donated brings comfort to a family wondering where their next meal will come from and reassures children who face food insecurity. These cans represent more than food; they represent compassion, solidarity, and a belief in a community where no one is forgotten,” Phoenix Child Welfare said.
Look at it this way, imagine the distress of a parent unable to provide bare essentials or the heartbreak of a child who goes to bed hungry. These are not just statistics or stories — they are our neighbours, the children we see at school and the families we greet at community events.
The PCW sees these faces every day, and we know that together, we can turn the tide of hunger. However, the PCW cannot do it alone.
“Our work at Phoenix Child Welfare has always centred on the well-being of our youngest and most vulnerable. With ONE CAN, we aim to create a ripple effect of kindness and care that addresses the most basic yet vital need: food. Your contribution could be the reason a family feels hope again,” Phoenix Child Welfare said.
It takes little to make a significant impact.
“Poverty is not an issue we can solve overnight. But through small, consistent acts of kindness, we can chip away at its devastating effects. We appeal to your heart, your humanity, and your commitment to the community we all call home. Join us in this fight — ONE CAN at a time. Together, let’s rewrite the story of hunger and hardship for families and children in our community,” Phoenix Child Welfare said.

Donated items can be dropped off at the Phoenix Child Welfare office at 10 Featherstone Place, Whetstone. Community members can schedule a pick-up at your convenience.
