Popular comedian David Kau has apologised to Sport, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie for his comments that he made last week. Last week, Kau wrote on X that the comedy sector in South Africa was not supported or recognised by the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture.

Kau shared his frustrations about how government did not provide financial assistance to the sector. Kau also shared that he was willing to do almost anything to meet up with McKenzie.

Minister hit back at Kau saying that he had attended every comedy show Kau had ever had. The minister also said he had bought loads of tickets despite Kau offering them for free.

On Tuesday, Kau wrote a long and heartfelt apology on X to the minister.

“I apologise unreservedly to you. I could have used a better approach to bring whatever issues the comedy industry is facing and follow the right channels.”

“Whatever issues we may have in the comedy sector can wait as there are more pressing issues and we trust that you will do your best to support all of Arts and Culture,” he wrote.

He also said he had not meant to undermine McKenzie’s role as a minister.

The minister of Sports, Arts and Culture replied to Kau’s apology and commented, “Thanks for apologising, I have the utmost love and respect for you and your craft.”

McKenzie also commented that he accepts Kau’s apology unreservedly.
