How to enter 'The Bachelor SA'

Last month it was announced that M-Net would be bringing South Africans a local version of the hit international show, The Bachelor.

The show, which originated in the US in 2002, has been adapted to suit audiences in other countries across the world, from Brazil to Vietnam, and is now about to hit our screens.

International formats are licenced from “format holders” for locally produced versions as a standard business practice for all broadcasters.

Also, recently, M-Net has licensed international formats such as The Voice, Dancing with the Stars, Survivorand My Kitchen Rules.

The head of publicity for M-Net, Lani Lombard, said: “Dating shows are standard offerings on most channels and platforms.

“M-Net was keen to understand their own audience’s response to dating shows and started exploring this with the broadcast of shows like the US’s version of First Dates.

Based on this feedback, we started investigating the options of producing our own dating show.”

She added that love had a universal appeal and that with 30 producing countries and 1 100 episodes, the show couldn’t go wrong. We asked Lombard a few questions about the show:

What do you look for in a bachelor?

There is a set criterion that we look for in a bachelor. He must be single and over 21.

He must have a good, successful job and be financially independent. When it comes to his character, he must have good communication skills, be spontaneous, extroverted and be regarded as a gentleman.

Of course, he must be attractive to the opposite sex, dress well and look charming.

The potential bachelor must be in a position to continue the relationship with the woman whom he finally chooses.

Is the part of the bachelor open to the public?

The search for The Bachelor is not open to the public. M-Net is handpicking the perfect Prince Charming.

How do you go about looking for him?

M-Net and Rapid Blue utilise their respective social networks and extensive connections to look for potential leads. We follow these up with intensive interviews and discussions with each potential bachelor.

Are background checks done?

Yes, all eligible Bachelors authorise the producers to conduct background checks in order to verify any of the information supplied. The ladies: Who is it open to? All single ladies are eligible to enter The Bachelor South Africa.

Are the ladies selected on what the Bachelor likes?

Entries have just opened, and we are encouraging all South African ladies above 21 years old who are looking for true love to enter. In the end, the group of 25 will be a mix of beautiful woman with different personalities, love languages and backgrounds who could be a potential perfect match for The Bachelor.

Before committing to be part of the show, all shortlisted talent will be briefed extensively about the format and filming process.

What do you need to enter?

You should be a South African citizen with an ID document or have a valid permit of permanent residence status in the country of South Africa. You will require a valid passport at the time that filming starts, as there may be some travelling on the cards if you’re selected to be part of the show. You will be required to send two photographs of yourself for an eligible entry.

Are background checks done?

Yes, if you’re shortlisted, you have to authorise the producers to conduct background checks in order to verify any of the information that you have supplied.
