The vivacious actress, dancer and choreographer, Khabonina Qubeka has found a new home as host of the new relationship show on BET.
Fix My Love focuses on couples who need help mending their relationship. But first they have to delve deep into their problems by showing viewers their relationship and exposing what drove them to a low point.
“When I was approached to do the show I was beyond excited. I’m such a huge fan of love and couples. This show really resonated with me. It’s so special and also very sensitive. When I did the very first episode, I remember thinking ‘my goodness, this couple is going through a lot’. It was a completely different animal than I thought it would be,” she said.
The show starts off by introducing the couple and giving their background story on how they fell in love. Then the couple shares what went wrong and asks for help from the show.
“There were so many entrants wanting the help. It just shows how many couples are having problems in their relationships. We also had a few drop-outs from the show because they were not comfortable enough to share everything on camera,” Qubeka said.
The couple is offered help from experts on the show, one of whom is Dr Khosi Jiyane.
“We help the couples by means of a clinical psychologist and counsellor, Dr Jiyane. She tries to get to the root of the problem. We then give the couple a chance to have a romantic dinner and talk it over. But there are twists and turns, like when we bring in a lie-detector test. Then the couple really starts freaking out,” she said.
While Qubeka understands that all TV shows aim to make money, she says that this show is very different for her.
“For me it’s not just a BET show. It’s deeper. It’s about how I interact with the couple off camera too. I always say thank you to them for sharing. I think it’s important to understand that these people are coming to the show because maybe all else has failed. So we need to be sensitive to their issues and show honesty towards wanting to assist them. It’s not all about ratings,” said Qubeka.
She added that everyone should tune in because there is something for everyone: “There is always something to learn on the show - they could help you in your life. We also want to start a conversation on social media so we can assist as many people as we can. Tune in, because this is a show that people are going to be talking about the next day.”
