Families are invited to end the year on a high note with KickstArt's vibrant rendition of the classic tale “Puss in Boots.”
Set against the backdrop of an enchanted Caribbean Island, this pantomime is set to dazzle theatregoers at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre from Thursday, December 5 to Sunday, January 12, 2025.
Audiences can expect a feast for the senses with sumptuous sets, lavish costumes and a delightful mix of song and dance, complemented by a plethora of jokes that will have both kids and adults giggling.
The panto stars local actor-singer, Rory Booth as the “fur-midable” Puss, alongside William Young as his bumbling owner, Tom Marzipan.
The cast also features Blessing Xaba as the long-suffering mother, Merry Marzipan, and Lyle Buxton, who plays Tom’s meathead brother, Tristram.
Bryan Hiles plays the pompous Grimsby Withergood, Roshanda Lewis stars as Princess Miranda and Mthokozisi Zulu plays the benevolent King Magnum, the Magnanimous.
Belinda Henwood features as good fairy Calypso Honeybunch and Kirsty Ndawo plays the clever Lord Grimsby’s cat, Selina Swiftclaw.
Originally performed in 2015, this revival is directed by British-born and Durban-based singer-actor, Darren King and is a feel-good affair that promises to entertain audiences of all ages.
Set designs are by Greg King and choreography is by Simone Mann.
The productions playlist has been updated with chart-toppers such as “Brave” by Sara Bareilles and “Hero” by Mariah Carey.
Returning fan-favourites include “Rhythm of the Night” by DeBarge, Michael Bublé’s “Sway”, Katy Perry’s “Roar” and Ricky Martin’s “La Vida Loca”.
These anthems, along with a host of other catchy tunes, are sure to keep toes tapping and encourage kids to sing along, creating a lively atmosphere that will resonate beyond the theatre.

“Umnikelo (Offering)”
A transformative 40-minute production titled “Umnikelo (Offering)” is coming to the Playhouse Theatre.
The production by Luyanda Sidiya and Gregory Maqoma originally premiered in Johannesburg in 2011 and later showcased at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown in 2012.
“Umnikelo” intertwines deep-rooted themes of offering and submission, evoking a visceral connection to the ancient practices it reflects. It encapsulates the idea of willingly surrendering oneself to a higher force.
The performance, therefore, transforms the stage into a sacred arena where dancers and audiences alike participate in a ritualistic experience, underscored by the rhythms of dance and music.
“‘Umnikelo’ offering, is about sharing the knowledge that I have gained over the years and it is also about giving thanks to God,” said dancer and choreographer Sidiya.

Carols Concert 2024
As the festive season approaches, the Durban City Orchestra (DCO) invites music lovers of all ages to join in a delightful celebration of Christmas at Rhumbelow Northlands Bowling Club on Sunday, December 8 at 3pm.
The concert promises an enchanting evening filled with heartwarming melodies and cherished holiday tunes that are sure to lift spirits and spread joy.
The programme features a selection of beloved Christmas classics, including “O Little Town of Bethlehem”, “Away in a Manger”, “Ding Dong Merrily on High”, “Hark the Herald Angels Sing”, “Silent Night”, “Once in Royal David’s City” and “O Holy Night”.
These timeless carols, synonymous with the season, will be performed by the orchestra. Audience members are also encouraged to join in the festive sing-along, with song sheets provided for all attendees.
This year’s concert features the multi-talented Rachel Nell, a skilled violinist with the DCO, who will step into the spotlight as the featured vocalist, along with other guest artists.
The DCO, one of South Africa's longest-running orchestras, boasts a dedicated group of approximately 30 active members who rehearse weekly to bring quality performances to the community.
Under the skilled direction of Resident Conductor Charl van der Merwe and Concert Master Jitske Brien, the orchestra has garnered a reputation for excellence and artistry.
