Cape Town’s Bascule Bar reopens, showcasing rare whisky’s and local art
The iconic Bascule Bar at The Cape Grace Hotel, located in Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront yacht marina, has reopened following a major revamp.
Known for its long bar and stunning marina views, Bascule has embraced the speakeasy culture of the city, making it an ideal spot for summer cocktails.
Bascule boasts one of South Africa’s most impressive whisky collections, with 570 whiskies sourced from 170 distilleries across 12 countries.
Among its rare offerings are vintage single cask whisky dating back to 1953 and bottles from distilleries that have since closed. One of the highlights is the Glenfarclas 60, a 60-year-old single malt Scotch presented in a bespoke crystal decanter, reflecting the rich heritage of the Grant family.
Whisky lovers can enjoy regular tastings at the bar, available from Wednesday to Sunday. These tastings offer insights into the history of whisky, along with the craft behind distilling, maturing, and blending.
For those who wish to store their own collections, Bascule offers the exclusive Bascule Vaults, where members can keep their prized bottles in personalised, engraved lockers, accessible through an annual subscription.
Adding to the ambiance, Bascule showcases over 18 pieces of local art, featuring both established and emerging South African artists. Highlights include works by Banele Khoza and Colbert Mashile, enhancing the bar’s distinctive atmosphere.
Bascule’s new food and drink offerings are led by Chef Asher Abramowitz and head mixologist Albre Marais. The cocktail menu features locally sourced ingredients, such as homemade rooibos and raspberry syrups.
Signature drinks include the ‘Garden Martini,’ made with lemongrass and Earl Grey syrup, vodka, and fresh basil. Chef Asher’s food menu includes an array of small plates, perfect for pairing with the bar’s cocktail selection.
The Cape Grace has also seen other recent updates, including the opening of its signature restaurant, Heirloom, under the direction of Chef Gregory Czarnecki. The hotel’s Pool Bar and Library Lounge offer additional relaxed settings to enjoy a drink or unwind with a book.
