British music icon Sir Elton John has opened up about losing his eyesight, months after battling a severe eye infection.
Speaking on stage during a gala performance of 'The Devil Wears Prada: The Musical' in London on Sunday, the legendary artist shared how his health has impacted his ability to attend previews of the production.
“I haven’t been able to come to many of the previews because, as you know, I have lost my eyesight,” John told the audience. “So it’s hard for me to see it. But I love to hear it and, boy, it sounded good tonight.”
He also expressed his gratitude to his husband, David Furnish, describing him as “my rock” during this difficult period.
In September, John revealed details of his condition on Instagram, stating that he had been dealing with a severe eye infection that left him with limited vision in one eye.
“Over the summer, I’ve been dealing with a severe eye infection that has unfortunately left me with only limited vision in one eye,” he wrote. “I am healing, but it’s an extremely slow process and it will take some time before sight returns to the impacted eye. I am so grateful for the excellent team of doctors and nurses and my family, who have taken such good care of me over the last several weeks.”
The “Tiny Dancer” hitmaker also confirmed early this year that he has no plans to return to touring, in an interview with Entertainment Tonight, John made it clear that his touring days are over, by saying, “No” after being asked if he will be touring.
Furnish added that family life now takes precedence. “We’ve got our sons, you know, they’re getting into their teenage years now. We don’t want to miss anything. We want to be present for that. It’s sort of a key decade, I think, in a child’s life,” he said, referring to their sons Zachary, 13, and Elijah, 11.
