Durban - Just over a week after a family were assaulted and robbed by a group of armed thieves on their dairy farm in Thornville outside Pietermaritzburg, police, together with a private security company, made a breakthrough in the case and arrested the alleged robbers.

Shaheen Suleiman, the owner of Magma Security & Investigations, said that in the early hours of the morning of October 15, a dairy farm owner and his family were attacked in their homestead.

Suleiman said the farm owner was severely assaulted by the six gunmen.

“The family members were also threatened and assaulted.”

Suleiman said gunmen robbed the family of their personal belongings and also made off with a rifle safe containing three rifles, cash and bank cards.

He said that on October 17, the Magma Investigation Team initiated an investigation into the matter.

Provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Nqobile Gwala said that on Friday, October 21, Thornville detectives, Crime Intelligence and Magma Security made a breakthrough in the case.

“The investigation led the team to Richmond where four suspects, aged between 22 and 27, were arrested,” she said.

Gwala said three rifles, a safe, chainsaw and bank cards were seized from the suspects.

She said some of the clothing and alcohol bought using the complainant’s bank cards was also seized by police.

Suleiman said the suspects had purchased alcohol for approximately R7 000 with the stolen bank card.

Gwala said a case of house robbery was being investigated by Thornville SAPS.

The suspects are expected to appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrates’ Court today.
