It's official: the Mazda CX-7 SUV has been discontinued.
Autocar heard it from Mazda UK and we confirmed it with Mazda SA, who heard it from head office. It has never been a big seller in the UK (about 800-1000 a year) and sales in South Africa are dropping (23 in June, 11 in July), partly, we suspect, as a result of the success of the new CX-5.
The CX-7 is in any case old technology, and would have had to give way to Mazda's SkyActiv 'clean' drivetrains, which are not only more fuel-efficient, they're also cheaper to make.
So, while the CX-9 is doing well in relevant markets such as Russia and the US, the CX-7 is becoming a bit of an orphan child. It was last updated in 2010, with a 2.5-litre naturally-aspirated engine driving through a five-speed automatic transmission.
Don't expect to see any more when present stocks are sold out.
