Binga, a 23-year-old silverback gorilla weighing 180 kg, recently underwent a unique dental surgery at the National Zoological Garden in Pretoria to address severe periodontal disease.
“Periodontal disease is common in humans and affects great apes in a similar way,” said Prof Gerhard Steenkamp, a veterinary dentistry and maxillofacial specialist from the University of Pretoria.
Binga’s case required the extraction of a molar tooth to alleviate his discomfort and prevent further complications.
The surgery was conducted under general anaesthesia, which presents unique challenges in great apes due to their size and behavioural complexities.
“Whenever we anaesthetise animals like gorillas, we take the opportunity to perform comprehensive health checks,” said Prof Katja Koeppel, a specialist in wildlife health.
In addition to the tooth extraction, the team conducted ultrasound evaluations and echocardiography to assess Binga’s overall health.
The collaborative effort included experts and students from the University of Pretoria’s Faculty of Veterinary Science, alongside staff from the Pretoria Zoological Garden.
Veterinary nursing student Alicia Gouws and veterinary science students Nicole Hassell and Elmar van Aardt gained hands-on experience during the procedure.
“These opportunities are invaluable for training future veterinary professionals,” Koeppel noted.
Binga is now pain-free, and his recovery has been smooth. The team joked about his potential advice to others: “Don’t forget to brush your teeth.”
