One person has been killed and another shot and wounded following a cash-in-transit heist on the N2 highway in Durban on Tuesday morning.
Chaos erupted after suspects blew up a cash van near the NPC cement factory.
Both sides of the freeway had to be closed and by mid-morning was still declared a crime scene.
Footage of the dramatic heist was shared widely on social media.
The KZN police said they were searching for an unknown number of suspects.
Police spokesperson Robert Nethsuinda reported that suspects accosted a cash-in-transit vehicle, assaulted two security guards, and stole their firearms along with an undisclosed amount of money.
"During the robbery, the suspects fired several shots, and three bystanders were reportedly shot and injured."
He said the suspects fled the scene through the Bayview area in Chatsworth.
"On Silverglen Drive, they shot and injured a private security guard who gave chase.
"The suspects allegedly shot towards a minibus taxi which they reportedly attempted to hijack.
A woman was shot and died, while another woman walking along the road was also shot and injured.
Police said more information would be provided at a later stage.
