South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (Sanral) says a team has been assigned to assess the damage on the N2 bridge in KwaZulu-Natal following Tuesday's partial collapse.
IOL initially reported that, according to Sanral, the Umbongintwini River Bridge on the N2 experienced a failure which resulted in road closure.
Sanral said the bridge failure is as a result of the heavy rains experienced in KZN this past weekend.
According to Sanral's Vusi Mona, Sanral specialist engineers are on site to assess the extent of the damage and remedial action to be taken.
"The south-bound carriageway over the bridge has been closed from Joiner Road and vehicles are being diverted to alternative routes. Motorists are advised to be cautious when approaching the site," he said.
The team confirmed that more information will be made public in due course.
KZN MEC for Transport said his office is in contact with the Minister of Transport regarding the incident.
