Pretoria - Companies or individuals using vehicles with a one ton capacity have been warned that from February 1 they will not be allowed to dispose of waste at the City of Tshwane’s landfill sites without a proper permit.

Users of waste disposal sites have been reminded of the extension of the deadline for applications of waste transportation permits, which ends on January 15.

Pretoria News reported in July that the City had failed to collect landfill fees estimated at R135  million from waste removal service providers.

The service providers were expected to pay a disposal fee to the municipality as part of their contract.

It was reported at the time that the metro had allowed them to continue operating for almost 11 months without adhering to certain terms of the contract, which included paying a disposal fee.

MMC for agriculture and environment Katlego Mathebe said the City had extended the waste transportation permit deadline for access to municipal waste disposal sites.

She said that only vehicles with one ton capacity and above full of waste had to pay for a permit.

“If you are merely maintaining your garden at home, the amount of garden waste may not fill up a vehicle of one ton …therefore you are not required to have a permit,” Mathebe said.

Applicants with successfully processed applications will be provided with the City’s banking details and issued with a permit after submitting proof of payment.

Mathebe urged applicants to apply as soon as possible for the permit.

The City said it took seven to 14 working days to process a permit.
