Bafana Bafana vice-captain Percy Tau has left Egyptian giants Al Ahly to join Qatar Stars League side Qatar SC.

The relegation-threatened Qatari club reportedly paid R8 million for Tau, who had just six months remaining on his contract with Al Ahly.

Tau's departure follows months of speculation that the 30-year-old attacker had fallen out of favour with Al Ahly's coach, Marcel Koller, who reportedly considered him surplus to requirements for the rest of their campaign.

Tau's limited game time with the Egyptian giants also led to him losing his place in the national team. Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos had publicly urged Tau to seek a move away from the club to reignite his international career.

Tau joined the Red Devils in 2021 under then-coach Pitso Mosimane after leaving English club Brighton & Hove Albion. During his three seasons with the the 'Red Devils', Tau won several titles, including multiple CAF Champions League trophies.

Qatar SC confirmed their signing of the "Lion of Judah" on X on Monday, stating they had  signed him from Al Ahly.

Tau is reported to have signed a six-month deal with the club and is believed to have been training alone since arriving in Doha as the club continues to work around the clock to register him.

Reports further state that the contract Tau signed includes a clause allowing for an extension of two seasons if he impresses during the remainder of the current season.
