It rained incessantly here last night, and Gavin Hunt’s boys made it pour goals as SuperSport United delivered a pasting to Amakhosi that they will not forget in a long time.

This resounding 4-1 victory marked a remarkable turn of events for SuperSport in what has been a wretched campaign for Hunt, completing a league double against the club that dismissed him unceremoniously at a critical juncture of the CAF Champions League.

Having previously beaten Chiefs 1-0 in the first round, SuperSport went for a double in emphatic style — a striking contrast to the 4-0 drubbing inflicted by Amakhosi during the Carling Knockout. What made this victory even sweeter was the presence of former Chiefs players leading the charge, delivering a stinging blow to their old club.

The first half saw Samir Nurkovic and Christian Saile contributing to the scoreboard, both players opting against celebrating their goals in a curious display of respect for their former team. Nurkovic opened the scoring just three minutes into the match, tapping in a low cross from the right, while Saile added a second shortly before half-time, smashing home a set-up from Nurkovic after a defensive lapse by the Chiefs.

Chiefs managed a moment of resurgence, equalising in the 30th minute through Glody Lilepo, who headed in a well-placed cross from Pule Mmodi. This moment of hope was short-lived, however, as SuperSport quickly reasserted their dominance. A blunder from Bradley Cross allowed Nurkovic to glide through and provide an assist for Saile, retaking the lead just three minutes after Chiefs’ equaliser.

The second half witnessed SuperSport continuing to dominate the game.

Despite Chiefs introducing Happy Mashiane and George Matlou, it was the visitors who struck again. Lebo Maboe delivered a fierce cross that Bruce Bvuma could only parry, allowing Gampani Lungu to add the third goal, celebrating with unrestrained joy alongside his teammates.

Chiefs' woes deepened as Gaston Sirinho received a second yellow card, forcing the home side into a further predicament. SuperSport capitalised on the opportunity to seal their emphatic victory, with Siphesihle Ndlovu launching a powerful shot from distance, further compounding the misery for Amakhosi.

As the match concluded, the atmosphere was electric with SuperSport signalling their intent, while Gavin Hunt approaches his 1000th match in the elite league with newfound confidence.

In other matches played on Tuesday night, Cape Town City’s woes continued as they lost 2-0 to Chippa United at Athlone Stadium in Cape Town. A brace by striker Sinoxolo Kwayiba during a 10 minute period from the 60th minute onwards, sealed victory for the Chilli Boys, consigning the Citizens to a ninth defeat in the league.

Elsewhere, Magesi travelled to Old Peter Mokaba Stadium as visitors, beating Polokwane City 1-0 through the lone strike of Thabang Sibanyoni in the 20th minute.
