Shrek’s back! A new movie is in the works, 14 years after the last movie in the franchise was released.

DreamWorks Animation recently took to social media to announce that “Shrek 5” will be released in theatres in July 2026.

They added that Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz would be reprising their roles as Shrek, Donkey, and Princess Fiona, respectively.

Posting on its official social media account, the production company wrote: "Not too Far, Far Away… @Shrek 5 is coming to theatres on July 1, 2026 with Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz.”

It is still unknown if Antonio Banderas will return to voice Puss in Boots.

With an original storyline, beloved characters and comic wit, the “Shrek” franchise, which features the beloved ogre and his loveable companions, has amassed a massive following worldwide since the first film premiered in 2001.

It spawned four original movies as well as multiple short films and a spin-off movie, “Puss in Boots”.

There are even Shrek attractions at Universal Studios theme parks worldwide, including Shrek’s Far Far Away Land at Universal Studios Singapore, which invites park goers to explore a recreation of Fiona’s kingdom, complete with Donkey’s live show and opportunities to meet beloved characters.

The Shrek franchise is the second highest-grossing animated franchise, with a cumulative gross of $4.03 billion worldwide.

It is surpassed only by the “Despicable Me” series. The original Shrek movie was the first film to win the Oscar for Best Animated Feature after its introduction at the 2002 Academy Awards.

“Shrek Forever After”, which was released in 2010, saw Shrek and Fiona happily married and parents to their triplets. But the couple then got tricked into signing a pact with the evil Rumpelstiltskin to trade a day from his childhood for a day as a real ogre.

He unknowingly signs away the day he was born and much of the movie is spent in an alternative universe, where Shrek never existed.

However, a kiss from Fiona, his one true love, saves the day and turns everything back to normal with Shrek realising how happy he is with his normal life.

Meanwhile, the storyline for the new movie is being kept under wraps.
