Let’s face it, differences in opinions and outlooks between one generation and another do exist. A generation gap can be used to describe the differences in thoughts, actions, and tastes exhibited by members of younger generations vs older ones.

There are also differences in how each generation travels and sees the world. Because of different tastes, an experience that appeals to Gen X, may not appeal to millennials and Gen Z.

With cruising growing in popularity, there is a cruise for every generation and every type of traveller. Here are the best cruise experiences for each generation, according to Kevin Bubolz, NCL’s VP and Managing Director of Continental Europe, Middle East, and Africa.

Generation X

According to Bubolz, Gen X travellers often crave destinations that offer enriching learning experiences therefore an Asia and Africa cruise would be ideal for this generation.

Asia cruise itineraries typically explore countries like Japan, China, South Korea, Thailand and Vietnam, where travellers get to experience energetic city exploration in Tokyo and Bangkok, balanced with serene temples and ancient palaces, while also enjoying the diverse local cuisine and soak up stunning landscapes like Ha Long Bay and the Great Wall of China.

Gen X will love this experience with its rich cultural heritage, historical significance, and diverse environments, Asia perfectly aligns with these preferences.

On an African cruise, Gen X travellers get to sail popular African countries and cities like Cape Town, Mossel Bay, Namibia and Madagascar.

NCL’s Norwegian Dawn and Norwegian Sky will be sailing through the southern African waters of South Africa from November 2024 and travellers will get to go on wildlife safaris, explore beautiful coastlines, encounter diverse cultures, and tuck into traditional African delicacies… all without any long-haul flights.

“The regional cruises provide a fresh take on Africa and allow Gen Xers with families and jobs to stick closer to home for convenience,” said Bubolz.

Millennials

The cruise expert said that when it comes to millennial travellers, they prefer experiences that connect them with nature and themselves so an Alaska Cruise and a Caribbean Cruise would be ideal.

On an Alaska cruise itinerary, a millennial traveller can explore the Inside Passage, with stops in ports like Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan, and Glacier Bay National Park.

On this cruise travellers can gear up for towering glaciers, pristine fjords, and abundant wildlife or explore charming port towns, take a helicopter ride over ice fields, go whale watching, or hike through lush rainforests.

Bubolz said that since millennials prioritise personal experiences with nature, Alaska ticks these boxes.

“Plus, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime destination perfect for families, with plenty of kid-friendly activities and excursions,” he said.

Millennials also work hard and play hard, so a Caribbean cruise is also ideal for them. Bubolz highlighted that millennials would love this cruise as it is the ultimate antidote to the daily grind for many millennials.

“Additionally, the shorter sailings, typically 5-7 days, allow for easy combination with a visit to the mainland US, making it a fantastic option for those seeking sun, new experiences, and a chance to recharge,” he said.

A Caribbean cruise covers many islands, including the Bahamas, Jamaica, Mexico, and the US Virgin Islands and travellers get to lounge on beaches, swimming in crystal-clear waters, and snorkelling among colourful coral reefs.

Gen Z

According to Bubolz, the Mediterranean Cruise and Transatlantic Cruise should be at the top of the list for Gen Z explorers. The Mediterranean Cruise sails iconic destinations like Italy, Greece, Spain, France, Croatia, and Turkey.

On this cruise, Ge Z travellers can marvel at ancient ruins, stroll through charming villages, eat their fill of Mediterranean food at waterfront cafés, bask in the sun on picturesque beaches, and dance the night away at trendy beach clubs.

“The Mediterranean is a treasure trove of Instagram-worthy backdrops, from the colourful houses of Cinque Terre to the white-washed buildings of Santorini.

“Gen Z travellers will find plenty of opportunities for unique experiences and photo ops, whether it’s exploring hidden coves, attending a local festival, or simply enjoying the nightlife in cities like Barcelona and Mykonos,” he said.

On a Transatlantic Cruise, Bubolz said that Gen Z will love it as it provides the opportunity to gain bragging rights among friends and create memories that will last a lifetime and a top choice for a gap year adventure if funds allow.

“Transatlantic cruises can be surprisingly affordable, especially if you opt for an inside cabin or travel during the off-season,” said Bubolz.

The cruise’s itinerary typically includes stops in destinations like Iceland, Ireland, Spain, and Portugal and travellers can go on an epic journey across the Atlantic Ocean, with several days at sea to enjoy the onboard amenities, relax by the pool and soak up the sun.

Depending on your itinerary, you may also explore unique ports of call, like Reykjavik’s geothermal pools or Dublin’s historic pubs.

“So, don’t let outdated stereotypes hold you back, there really is a cruise for every generation, and the time to book is now,” said Bubolz.
