A total of 14 municipal ward by-elections will take place in the Free State, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, North West and Western on Wednesday.
The Electoral Commission of SA (IEC) said the posts became vacant due to deaths and resignations of councillors.
The by-elections will be contested by 51 political party candidates from 13 parties, and an independent candidate.
In the Free State, Ward 07 in Ngwathe Municipality will be contested by three party candidates: Thabo Isaac Mpholo of the African Congress for Transformation (ACT), Tshediso Ramabodu of the ANC; and Mpolokeng Jeanett Ramokhoase of the EFF.
IEC spokesperson, Kate Bapela, said the ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s death. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 42,62%.
In Gauteng: Ward 87 in the City of Johannesburg Municipality will be contested by four party candidates; Walleen Esme Mostert of the ANC, Kyle Dalton Jacobs of the DA, Aphelele Manyana of the EEF, and Malik Dasoo of Rise Mzansi.
Bapela said the ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 48,78%.
She said Ward 89 in the City of Johannesburg Municipality will be contested by four party candidates: Mavis Pinky Lehoko of the ANC, Zander Shawe of the DA, Matthew William Pienaar of the Organic Humanity Movement (OHM) and Lindokuhle Stanford Masondo of the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK Party).
Bapela said the ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 59,64%.
She said Ward 92 in the City of Tshwane Municipality will be contested by six party candidates: Nhlanhla Prince Mlungisi Msibi of the ANC, Lister Mpheng Ramphisa of the Bolsheviks Party of South Africa, Shimmy Nathaniel Mashamaite of the DA, Modise Solomon Lekopa of the EFF, Felix Hugo Prigge of the Organic Humanity Movement (OHM), and Given Sipho Nthongoa of the MK party.
Bapela said the ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 31,75%.
In KwaZulu-Natal, Ward 34 in the eThekwini Municipality will be contested by an independent candidate, Andrew Clint Akkers and four other party candidates: Thamsanqa Bongani Dlamini of the African Movement Congress (AMC), Mashinini Alpheous Nkosi of the ANC, Jerald Raghunath of the DA and Thembisile Patricia Khuzwayo of the MK party.
The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 41,92%.
In Mpumalanga, Ward 10 in the Steve Tshwete Municipality will be contested by four party candidates: Macaleni Paulos of the ANC, Gift Tshehla of the EFF, Helena Pilodia of the Middleburg and Hendrina Residents Front, and Xolani Meshack Shambell of the MK party.
The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s death. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 37,16%.
Ward 17 in the Nkomazi Municipality will be contested by four political party candidates: Bhekumuzi Sunboy Makhubela of the ANC, Thoko Fortunate Nkuna of the EFF, Thembi Siphiwe Canhane of the IFP and Dingizwe Colence Khoza of the MK party
“The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s death,” Bapela said. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 46,58%.
In North West, Ward 26 in the Moretele Municipality will be contested by three party candidates: Hasane Albert Mokone of the ANC, Ulysses Frans Mphephe Mathibe of the EFF and Ernest Sello Chauke of the MK party.
“The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s death,” said Bapela. She said the voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 46,89%.
Ward 17 in the Madibeng Municipality will be contested by two party candidates: Kresta Hlanganani Mathonsi of the ANC and Alinah Nthabiseng Maboye of the EFF.
“The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation,” she said. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 39,18%.
Ward 30 in the Madibeng Municipality will be contested by three party candidates: Martin Mathonsi of the ANC, Anthony Graeme Peplar of the DA, and Koekie Thandeka Mashego of the MK party.
“The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation,” Bapela said . The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 46,62%.
Ward 45 in the Rustenburg Municipality will be contested by three party candidates: Nomziwakhe Christinah Ntsoeu of the ANC, Thabo Elias Modimokwane of the EFF and Thabiso George Molefe of the MK party.
“The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s death, Bapela said. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 34,83%.
In Western Cape, Ward 58 in the City of Cape Town will be contested by three political party candidates: Bonita Stroeble of the Africa Restoration Alliance (ARA), Simphiwe Romeo Silwana of the ANC, and Richard Charles Hill of the DA.
“The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation,” said Bapela. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 58,06%.
Ward 02 in the Cederberg Municipality will be contested by four political party candidates: Salmon Daniels of the ARA, Julio Julian Fransman of the ANC, Yves De Antonio Blaauw of the DA, and Lowrens Jacobus Smith of the Patriotic Alliance (PA).
“The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation,” she said. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 55,25%.
Ward 17 in the Stellenbosch Municipality will be contested by four political party candidates: Justin Carlo Jacobs of the ARA, Sebastian Peter Matthew Sedeman of the ANC, Jeremy Shaun Fasser of the DA, and Desmond Block of the MK party.
Bapela said the ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 55,70%.
