Cape Town - The body of a boy believed to be between the ages of four and seven-years-old has been found hidden inside a school bag this morning in Old Crossroads.

Police arrived at the scene just after 11.30am, where the body of the unidentified child was discovered inside the bag in Sagwityi Street.

Police are now awaiting medical and forensic teams examination on the body to determine the cause of death.

A murder docket has since been opened for investigation.

Police spokesperson Colonel Andre Traut said: “The circumstances surrounding the death of an unknown boy believed to be aged between four and seven are under police investigation, and the cause of his death is yet to be established.”

Siya Monakali of Iitha Labantu, an organisation that advocates for women and children’s rights, said they were outraged by the incident.

“As an organisation that has advocated for women and children’s rights for over 30 years, we are shocked that the body of a young child has been discovered in the Crossroads community in Nyanga.

“We feel that not enough is being done to try and address the issue of GBV.

“It appears the Western Cape is leading the nation when it comes to cases of Gender Based Violence and Femicide.

“We appeal to our community to come forward with any information about this incident and report it to the police.”
