Betway Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns have confirmed the signing of Bafana Bafana defender Keanu Cupido from Cape Town City.
Cupido, who led the Citizens in Thamsanqa Mkhize’s absence during the season, joins Sundowns days after the club allowed Rushine de Reuck to leave on loan to the Israeli Premier League.
Capped at international level twice, the 27-year-old joins Sundowns after seven years in the Mother City. Previously, he spent two years in France on the books of AC Ajaccio.
According to reports, Cupido, who was also on the books of Bidvest Wits, expressed an interest to return to Gauteng after establishing himself as one of Cape Town City’s key players over the last couple of years.
Cape Town City slapped a R15 million price tag on him, but after some negotiations, both clubs were able to agree on a R11 million fee.
Speaking after his move was confirmed on Wednesday, Cupido said: “I feel like this is a full circle for me. I came here as a kid, I left and now I’m back,” said Cupido.
”This is the proudest moment for me as a footballer because I know the standards of Mamelodi Sundowns and I feel like I need keep the standards as well.
“My name is Keanu Cupido and I’m Yellow.”
Cupido is the third deal that Sundowns have completed in this transfer window. They have already signed Bafana Bafana’s Jayden Adams from Stellenbosch FC, as well as Argentinean defender Lucas Suarez.
