An uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party councillor has spoken out on the alleged attempts by the suspended police minister, Senzo Mchunu, to have him arrested shortly before he was to participate in a by-election in the KwaDukuza Municipality.

Doshie “Gaddafi” Govender said he got wind of his impending arrest a few days before the by-elections in April.

It has been reported that KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner, Lt General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, told the Madlanga Commission of inquiry on Friday that Mchunu allegedly wanted the police to arrest Govender.

He alleged that Mchunu called a North Coast station commander identified as Major General Antony Gopal to a meeting to inquire about a case that he and his ANC comrades believed involved Doshie “Gaddafi” Govender of the Shakaskraal ward in KwaDukuza.

At the time, the popular Govender had left the ANC, making accusations of discrimination, and had joined the MK Party, it has been reported.

In a statement to The Mercury, Govender detailed how the events unfolded: “On the 19th of September 2025, Day 3 of the Madlanga Commission had taken place. General Mkhwanazi made a statement that highlighted an important aspect of my by-election campaign.

“He (Mkhwanazi) stated the involvement of the Minister of Police, Senzo Mchunu, and his attempts to derail me from contesting in the by-election in Ward 28. The admission made by General Mkhwanazi was indeed correct and true.”

Govender said he had been informed of such attempts to prevent him from contesting the by-elections for the MK Party.

The MK Party has indicated that they are gathering information before taking any further steps.
