A dramatic cash‑in‑transit (CIT) robbery on the M35, near Umlazi left one security officer injured on Friday morning.

ALS Paramedics said it was alerted via emergency calls to an alleged CIT heist and a possible explosion just before the KwaMakutha turn‑off on the M35.

ALS Paramedics said when paramedics arrived on the scene they found that the cash‑in‑transit van had been blown up by suspects. Two guards were present; one sustained minor injury and was treated on scene by ALS paramedics.

The incident comes after another CIT heist on the R617 on Tuesday.

It said the South African Police Service (SAPS) immediately cordoned off the area.

The M35 has been closed and is expected to remain so for several hours to allow investigators to comb the scene. At this stage the sequence of events that led to the heist remains unclear; SAPS have launched a full investigation.

This latest heist comes just days after The Mercury reported two other violent CIT robberies in KwaZulu‑Natal: a December 3 attack along the R617 where suspects fled with cash and firearms

And prior to that, on November 19, a security guard was shot and wounded during a brazen cash‑in‑transit robbery outside Midway Mall in Newlands West, Durban

The spate of recent CIT robberies underscores growing concern over the methods used by armed gangs, often involving explosives, firearms and daylight ambushes on public roads.

Authorities have urged anyone with information to contact their nearest police station, as they intensify efforts to track down the suspects.
