There is something magical about summertime in KwaZulu-Natal — warm sunshine, the sound of families exploring the outdoors, and the unmistakable sweetness of freshly picked litchis.
This year, one of the province’s favourite festive season traditions marks a significant milestone: the 20th Annual Litchi Picking Festival at Verbara Estate. Established in 2005, the festival has become more than an event — it is a cherished outing for locals and holidaymakers alike.
Located just a scenic drive from Durban, the festival grounds are easy to find, nestled along a fully tarred route that leads to Verbara Estate.
Whether you are travelling from Durban or Stanger, simple directions via the Salt Rock/Umhlali offramp will guide you straight to the lush orchards, with GPS details and Google Maps ensuring you will never lose your way.
From December 13 to 23, visitors are invited to pick their own juicy litchis between 9am and 3pm. Should the trees continue to bear fruit, the festival will resume after Christmas, on December 26 — a perfect post-holiday day out.
There will be no picking December 24 and 25.
Entry for those aged three and older — R180 includes 1.6kg of litchis to take home, or R130 for 800g — and both options come with unlimited on-site eating plus a tractor ride through the estate.
Children under three enter free, while combo tickets with Hidden Forest Tours create an extra layer of adventure for just R400.
Halaal food and beverage stalls will be available, ensuring everyone can enjoy the day’s offerings. Tickets may be booked online via the festival website, and WhatsApp queries are welcomed on 064 763 6457. Email enquiries can be directed to litchifestival@gmail.com.
As with all farm experiences, certain rules keep the orchards pristine — no pets, bags, or cooler boxes are allowed in the picking area. Guests can stay up to date via the festival’s Facebook and Instagram platforms, where daily updates and announcements are shared.
