Heroic paramedics save driver from burning vehicle on M4 highway, but passenger sadly dies

A driver was rescued from a burning vehicle on the M4 highway on Wednesday morning, however the passenger could not be saved.

The heroic actions of two paramedics who saved a driver from a burning vehicle on the M4 highway near uMhlanga on Wednesday morning has been praised by the KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs.

KZN VIP Ambulance said its paramedics were first on the scene of the serious crash, near the M41 ramp towards Gateway, where a vehicle was engulfed in flames with two occupants trapped inside.

“KZN VIP medics Molefe and Howard immediately sprang into action, without hestitation. Braving intense heat and flames, they managed to free the driving from the burning vehicle. Tragically despite their relentless efforts, the flames were too severe for them to reach the passenger.” 

The KZN Cogta department said the paramedics had displayed extraordinary courage under life-threatening conditions. Buthelezi expressed his appreciation for the bravery and professionalism demonstrated by the emergency responders.

The MEC also commended the swift arrival and decisive action of the Fire Department, whose intervention prevented further devastation by extinguishing the blaze.

“The selfless dedication shown by these men and women in uniform is a testament to the spirit of service that defines our emergency personnel. Their bravery deserves our highest respect and recognition,” said MEC Buthelezi.

The driver was stabilised on scene and transported to a nearby medical facility for further treatment. SAPS has confirmed that investigations into the cause of the accident are underway.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the deceased during this difficult time. We also wish the injured driver a speedy recovery,” the MEC concluded.
