Six people were injured when cash-in-transit (CIT) robbers opened fire during a heist on Shepstone Road near Hendred Road in Pinetown on Thursday evening.
This is the fourth CIT heist in KwaZulu-Natal in recent weeks. On December 5, a security officer was injured in a CIT robbery on the M35, near Umlazi, this was just days after a similar heist along the R617 near the P27-1 Pevensey turn-off.
On November 19, a security guard was shot and wounded during a brazen cash‑in‑transit robbery outside Midway Mall in Newlands West, Durban.
ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said emergency services responded to multiple calls for assistance.
“Just after 7:30 pm on Thursday evening, ALS Paramedics responded to numerous calls of a cash-in-transit robbery on Shepstone Road,” Jamieson said.
ALS Paramedics said the crime scene was across a long distance due to the number of people who had been shot at by the robbers.

“Paramedics arrived on the scene waited for the South African Police Service (SAPS) to secure the scene before coming onto the scene,” Jamieson said.
According to Jamieson, the crime scene covered a large area.
“Paramedics found the scene spread over approximately 300 metres and immediately assessed the scene,” he said.
Jamieson said it was reported at the scene that there was heavy gunfire during the heist.
“It is alleged that a group of men attacked the cash van before opening fire on the cash van and the passing motorists,” he said.
Emergency crews confirmed that six people, including a police officer were shot and injured in the incident. One man sustained critical injuries.
“Paramedics found one man believed to be a passenger in a vehicle had sustained two gunshot wounds to his abdomen and was in a critical condition,” Jamieson said.
He added that the man was treated at the scene before being rushed to hospital. “He was stabilised by ALS Paramedics and the Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) before being transported to a nearby hospital for the urgent care that he required.”
Four other people, including two security officials, sustained less severe injuries and once stabilised on scene, were transported to hospital for further care, Jamieson said.
The SAPS have been approached for comment.
