A 43-year-old man believed to be involved in a used car parts theft syndicate was arrested on Monday by members of private security company Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA).
According to RUSA, officers were dispatched following a tip-off regarding a theft in progress at a used car parts business north of Durban. Upon entering the premises, officers conducted a thorough search and apprehended the suspect.
During questioning, it was established that the man allegedly operated in collaboration with vehicle theft syndicates.
WhatsApp conversations recovered from his cellphone reportedly contained orders for high-end vehicle components, such as engine parts and computer boxes.
Officers also found the suspect in possession of a bag of tools believed to be used in stripping vehicles.
He allegedly intended to dismantle engines, gearboxes, computer boxes, and other valuable components from luxury vehicles to supply criminals involved in vehicle theft operations.
RUSA said that it could not be determined whether a getaway vehicle was nearby at the time of the arrest. The suspect has been detained at Verulam SAPS in KZN for further investigation.
