The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms, cautioning residents in the north-western parts of KwaZulu-Natal to prepare for potentially dangerous weather conditions.
The warning is valid from 10am to 7pm on Wednesday, January 7. According to SAWS, the affected areas include Abaqulusi, Alfred Duma, Dannhauser, eDumbe, eMadlangeni, Endumeni, Newcastle, Okhahlamba and uPhongolo.
Forecasts indicate that the region can expect severe thunderstorms accompanied by heavy downpours, damaging winds, excessive lightning, and hail. These conditions raise the risk of localised flooding, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone areas.
Severe storms on New Year's Eve caused extensive damage to property and critical infrastructure, including the disruption of electricity in the uThukela District, especially in the Alfred Duma Municipality. Households in Okhahlamba were also hit by the storm, the KZN Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs said at the time.
SAWS has warned that the storms may lead to “localised flooding of susceptible roads, bridges, and settlements” as well as damage to infrastructure and potential injuries from flying debris. Motorists are advised to be especially vigilant, as slippery roads and poor visibility could contribute to minor motor vehicle accidents.
In response to the warning, MEC for KZN Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, urged residents “to exercise extreme caution and follow safety guidelines, especially regarding floodwaters and lightning risks”.
Authorities are advising the public to avoid unnecessary travel, particularly in areas known to flood, and to remain indoors during severe weather where possible.
Residents are also encouraged to stay informed through official weather updates and heed all safety instructions issued by disaster management structures.
