The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) in the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature has issued a strong condemnation of death threats directed at KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thami Ntuli, warning that the threats constitute a criminal act and a serious threat to democratic governance.
In a statement released by IFP Chief Whip in the KZN Legislature and national chairperson, Blessed Gwala, the party said it condemns “in the strongest possible terms the vile and dangerous death threats directed at the KwaZulu-Natal Premier, Honourable Thami Ntuli, that are circulating openly on social media and explicitly calling for the Premier’s death.”
According to the IFP, the threats amount to “a reckless incitement to violence and a direct attack on democratic governance,” and cannot be dismissed as political rhetoric or opinion.
The IFP further alleged that Premier Ntuli’s stance against corruption may be the underlying reason for the threats.
“It is evident that the Honourable Premier has become a stumbling block to those with an insatiable appetite for embezzling public funds disguised as service delivery,” the statement said, adding that “his firm stance against corruption and maladministration has made him a target for individuals who fear accountability.”
Emphasising the seriousness of the matter, the party said: “Threats of this nature are not political statements or expressions of opinion. They are criminal acts.”
The IFP warned that anyone issuing or amplifying such threats “will be identified, investigated, and held fully accountable under the law,” stressing that there would be “zero tolerance for political intimidation or calls for violence in a constitutional democracy.”
The party called for immediate intervention by authorities, stating that it would “not accept complacency or silence.” The IFP confirmed that it has opened a criminal case and is demanding “an urgent, impartial, and comprehensive investigation by relevant law enforcement and security authorities.”
In addition to state action, the IFP said it would conduct its own investigation to ensure accountability. “Heads must roll in this matter,” the statement read, while also calling for the Premier to receive “the highest level of protection from the State.”
The party insisted that those responsible must be exposed fully, including “disclosing who instructed, encouraged, or supported these dangerous utterances.” It warned that “there must be real consequences” and issued a stern message to those behind the threats: “You will be pursued, exposed, and held accountable.”
Concluding its statement, the IFP reaffirmed its support for Premier Ntuli, declaring that “the Honourable Premier will not be intimidated, and political violence will not be allowed to take root in KwaZulu-Natal.”
