As the festive season approaches, the Government Employees Pension Fund (GEPF) has issued a stern warning to members and pensioners to be on high alert for scams targeting their pensions.
In a brief statement to the media, the GEPF said fraudsters are increasingly exploiting the holiday season, using tactics such as fake officials, phishing messages, and requests for “fast-track” payments to access members’ pension funds.
"The Government Employees Pension Fund (GEPF) warns members and pensioners about criminals who target pension benefits through scams and fraud, especially during the festive season. Your pension is your future security; stay vigilant at all times." GEPF said.
GEPF emphasised that those who suspect fraud should stop communication immediately and report the matter to the CEPF Fraud Helpline at 0800 203 900, their nearest GEPF office, or the South African Police Service (SAPS).
"Be extra cautious of phone calls and messages during December. Do not rush into financial decisions under pressure. Avoid sharing personal details on public Wi-Fi or shared devices.
"Do not accept help from strangers offering to 'fast-track' payments. Verify all benefit-related enquiries directly with official GEPF offices.REMEMBER: The GEPF will NEVER ask for money to release benefits and will NEVER request your banking details via WhatsApp or SMS."
