Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS) says operations at O.R. Tambo International Airport have returned to normal following flight delays and diversions over the weekend.

This comes after the air traffic authority confirmed that severe weather, including thunderstorms, temporarily disrupted aircraft movements on Sunday, prompting several flight diversions at Africa’s busiest airport. The authority had previously said the delays were linked to temporary operational constraints at the airport’s air traffic control services.

"Following its media statement issued yesterday regarding operational disruptions at OR Tambo International Airport, Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS) SOC Limited would like to provide an update on the current situation," ATNS said.

"ATNS confirms that air traffic operations at OR Tambo International Airport are normal this morning, with services continuing as planned. However, the nature of aviation is such that operations should remain subject to constant close monitoring and evaluation".

ATNS added that safety remains its highest priority and that it continues to work closely with airlines and airport authorities to ensure the safe and efficient management of air traffic.

"ATNS further clarifies that the flight diversions experienced yesterday afternoon were not caused by human resource constraints, but were the result of severe weather conditions, including thunderstorms, which temporarily affected safe aircraft operations within the OR Tambo International Airport airspace".

"ATNS reiterates that safety remains its highest priority and continues to work closely with airlines, airport authorities, and aviation stakeholders to ensure the safe and efficient management of air traffic".
