As anticipation builds ahead of next month’s 2026 Budget, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana has called on South Africans to share their ideas and suggestions on government spending, taxes, and economic priorities.
The budget is set to be delivered on February 25, 2026, and comes at a time of rising public interest, as households and businesses watch closely for any changes in taxes or government spending.
National Treasury said this year’s budget will aim to balance economic growth with support for vulnerable households, while addressing debt sustainability and ensuring the efficient use of public resources.
"The Minister of Finance, Mr Enoch Godongwana, invites South Africans to share their suggestions on the 2026 Budget. Minister Godongwana will deliver the National Budget Speech on 25 February 2026. The budget allocation aims to strike a balance between growing the economy and supporting the vulnerable amid limited resources."
Last week, IOL also reported that the World Bank has given South Africa a modest vote of confidence, saying the economy is growing again but warning that the recovery remains weak.
According to the latest World Bank Global Economic Prospects report, South Africa’s economy expanded by an estimated 1.3% in 2025, supported by a more reliable electricity supply, a strong agricultural harvest and improving business confidence.
However, while the economy is showing signs of recovery, debt levels remain high, with South Africa’s debt-to-GDP ratio hovering around 76%–78%, keeping public finances under pressure.
The Minister has outlined several areas for public input, including government spending priorities, tax policies, municipal finances, state-owned entity finances, and investments in energy and water infrastructure.
According to the Treasury, South Africans who wish to contribute can submit their suggestions through the National Treasury’s Budget Tips portal: Budget Tips Submission Form.
Contributions should be concise, not exceeding 300 words. Citizens can also share ideas via social media using the hashtags #TipsForMinFin and #Budget2026. The deadline for submissions is 16 February 2026.
