The City of Cape Town’s Events Permit Office is reviewing an application for a revised route for the Cape Town Street Parade (Tweede Nuwe Jaar Parade) in 2026, with residents and spectators advised to take note of proposed logistics.
Pending the finalisation of safety and operational planning, the event is set to take place on Monday, January 5 2026, in Green Point.
The Kaapse Klopse Karnival Association (KKKA), which organises the annual minstrel parade, has applied for the procession to move along the fan walk down Somerset Road and into DHL Stadium.
Under the proposal, about 20 000 performers would march from Chiappini Street, entertaining crowds along the 1.2km stretch of Somerset Road, before entering the stadium.
The parade is scheduled to start at 11.00am, with the last troupe expected to reach the parade corridor from 5.00pm. From there, festivities will continue inside the stadium, where day one of the KKKA competitions will take place until 10.00pm.
The event is expected to significantly affect traffic in and around Green Point from early on Monday, 5 January.
Major roads impacted by closures between 6.00am and 9.00pm include Somerset Road, Green Point Main Road, Prestwich Street, Chiappini Street, Ebenezer Road and Waterkant Street.
Access during this time will be limited to residents, permit holders, hotel guests and staff. A comprehensive list of road closures will be published once final approvals are in place.
Spectators have been warned that no parking will be allowed on side streets in Green Point. Vehicles parked illegally, in no-stopping zones or in front of residential driveways will be towed.
Free public parking will be available at P9 and P10 on Bill Peters Drive in Green Point. Paid parking options are also available at the V&A Waterfront, which offers both open-air and underground parking bays.
The City said further communication will follow once the review process and logistical arrangements have been finalised.
