Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Gert Schalkwyk scored his team's second goal to overcome Moroka Swallows in extra time in the semifinals of the SAA Supa8 at the Absa Stadium on Sunday.

Played in front of a capacity crowd of more than 55 000, the semifinal had all the makings of a thriller as Swallows came back to equalise in the second half of a tension-filled match.

Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp, who has been under scathing criticism after failing to win a single game in the Castle Premiership, probably saved his job with Sunday's win.

It was the first time Amakhosi had beaten the Birds in over two years. Chiefs' last win over them was in the SAA Supa8 semifinal of 2004 - also in Durban.

Chiefs will now face SuperSport United in the final, scheduled for October 21 at a venue still to be decided.

Chiefs went into the second half a goal ahead after Scara Ngobese, who has missed most of Chiefs' games this season through poor form, struck a low shot after receiving a header from Shaun Bartlett.

Swallows could have gone a goal ahead earlier, after former Chiefs striker Songwe Chalwe hit the crossbar with a thunderous shot which had Chiefs 'keeper Rowan Fernandez flatfooted.

Chiefs were reduced to 10 men when the referee gave defender S'phiwe Mkhonza his second yellow card for time-wasting in the 50th minute. This sent Chiefs supporters on the rampage as they threw missiles on to the pitch and temporarily halted the game.

It was the second time this week that Chiefs supporters had to be calmed down. Similar incidents took place in Wednesday's Premiership match, when they lost 2-1 to Bidvest Wits.

Chiefs' star midfielder Siyabonga Nkosi was substituted in the second half by Schalkwyk.

In the 60th minute, Swallows defender Bevan Fransman equalised for Swallows when he neatly headed a corner to the far left of Fernandez's goal, giving him no chance.

Chiefs fans, who were not happy about many of the referee's decisions, continued to throw bottles and disrupted the game a number of times.

The referee levelled the playing field by sending off Swallows' recent signing, left-back Bjorn Grugger, after he was adjudged to have made a dangerous tackle on Schalkwyk.

In the first half of extra time, Kaizer Motaung Jr, who had replaced Louis Agyemang, rounded a Swallows defender and shot at goalkeeper Greg Etafia, the ball rebounding off the keeper to win Schalkwyk an easy tap-in.

Swallows coach Gavin Hunt said: "I can't say what I want to say, but the referee made many questionable decisions.

"I can't say anything or do anything about how we played, but Chiefs' first goal should not have been allowed because there was an infringement on the goalkeeper.

"My players were also intimidated by the throwing of missiles."

Chiefs coach Middendorp criticised his team's fans. "Our fans have to accept that soccer is a losing and winning game.

"It is unacceptable for fans to conduct themselves in that manner.

"They should support their teams not only when they are winning. We should learn that disappointments are normal."

He said he was looking forward to the final.
