In the early hours of Monday, a dramatic confrontation unfolded in the Uvongo area of Margate, leaving two suspects dead following an intense shootout with police.
The incident transpired as law enforcement acted on intelligence suggesting the presence of individuals in possession of unlicensed firearms.
According to a statement by the South African Police Services (SAPS), the operation began when police officers approached a targeted house and announced their presence.
“The police officers approached the house and announced their presence, but there was no response from inside,” said Captain Ntathu Ndlovu in the statement.
Ndlovu said the SAPS members then made the decision to enter the premises and that was when the situation escalated rapidly.
Ndlovu also reveled that upon entering the house, police members were met with a barrage of gunfire directed at them and they retaliated.
“Police returned fire and two suspects were fatally wounded,” added Ndlovu.
Following the exchange, authorities confirmed the recovery of five unlicensed firearms from the scene, including two AK47 assault rifles and three additional pistols.
During the exchange of gunshots, there were no officers who sustained injuries.
