NFP faces internal turmoil as Mbali Shinga defies resignation order

The National Freedom Party (NFP) continues to grapple with internal tensions as its sole representative in the KwaZulu-Natal provincial legislature, Mbali Shinga, has failed to tender her resignation as mandated by her party leadership.

Initially directed to resign from her post as Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Social Development by a Thursday 9 am deadline, Shinga’s continued defiance poses significant challenges to the party's unity and cohesion.

The NFP confirmed to the Daily News that Shinga has once again rejected the directives issued by the National Executive Committee (NEC), prompting concerns about her commitment to party discipline.

In an interview with the Daily News the party reflected on the severity of the situation, the NFP asserted, “She has failed to reach her deadline, and she didn’t implement the directive of the party again.”

The implications of Shinga’s refusal to comply with party directives remain unclear, as officials from the NFP have chosen to withhold insights into potential disciplinary actions.

Nevertheless, the NFP's highest structure is currently engaged in discussions aimed at determining a way forward, a move indicative of the escalating issues within the party.

In more formal communication issued on Monday, the NFP reiterated the importance of Shinga notifying key officials including the KZN Premier and the Speaker of the Provincial Legislature once her resignation has been submitted.

According to the NFP, the NEC’s directive underscores a commitment to fostering unity and adherence to collective decisions, stating that the actions taken are not intended to undermine Shinga’s contributions but to reinforce party discipline.

“It is a call to consistency, unity, and fidelity to the decisions of the NEC,” the party remarked, highlighting the urgent need for compliance amidst rising tensions.

Shinga's current predicament is further complicated by ongoing disciplinary charges she faces, which include accusations of gross misconduct and an alleged defiance of party directives related to a failed motion of no confidence against KZN Premier Thami Ntuli.

This contentious motion, initially supported by the NFP in December, unraveled amidst chaotic scenes during a legislative sitting, reflecting the fragility of the party's situation.

With trust within the NFP seemingly strained, stakeholders await the outcome of the ongoing NEC discussions as party officials seek a resolution to restore stability.
