Turning 40 is a milestone that many approach with reflection, but South African singer Nomcebo Zikode is celebrating it with laughter, gratitude and a playful wish to stay forever young.
Known for her powerful voice and global hits, Zikode has embraced this birthday with an energy that reflects both her journey and her zest for life.
In a series of posts, she shared her excitement: “Not just ageing - I’m upgrading. Level 40 unlocked! Thank you, Lord, for the journey. Zolo lokhu bengina 15 years (just yesterday I was 15 years old). Time is really flying; I’m really grateful to have lived this long. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME.”
Her posts captured her lighthearted approach to ageing. In one, she wrote, “Still celebrating… because a queen deserves extended royalty treatment.”
In another, she admitted with humour, “I’m grateful and I want to live longer, but I don’t want to get older, what can I do? I want to be young forever.”
These words resonated with fans who flooded her comments with well-wishes and messages of love, celebrating not only her birthday but her enduring influence in music.
Zikode’s journey in music spans over fifteen years, beginning as a backing singer for other South African artists.
Her talent and dedication allowed her to transition into the spotlight, and her career took a major leap with her feature on Master KG’s “Jerusalema”.
The song became a global sensation, topping charts and inspiring dance challenges around the world. It not only introduced Zikode to international audiences but also cemented her as one of South Africa’s most recognisable musical voices.
Following “Jerusalema”, Nomcebo released her debut studio album, “Xola Moya Wam”. The album’s title track went gold within two weeks and eventually reached platinum status.
It showcased her ability to blend traditional South African sounds with contemporary beats, a style that has become her signature. The album received critical acclaim and further established her as an artist capable of bridging local and international audiences.
Zikode’s achievements extend beyond commercial success. She has earned multiple prestigious awards, including a Grammy for Best Global Music Performance for the song “Bayethe”, a collaboration with Zakes Bantwini and Wouter Kellerman.
She was also recognised as Best Global African Artist, and she was named as one of the top entertainers at the Forbes Woman Africa Awards. These accolades reflect her influence not only as a singer but also as a cultural ambassador for South African music.
