After nearly a decade together, 69-year-old Hollywood veteran Mel Gibson and 35-year-old screenwriter Rosalind Ross have officially confirmed their breakup.
The news, which broke on Tuesday, December 30, revealed that while the announcement is new, the couple has actually been living separate lives for about a year.
In a joint statement online, the pair said they want a peaceful transition focused on their family.
"Although it’s sad to end this chapter in our lives, we are blessed with a beautiful son and will continue to be the best parents possible."
The couple first met in 2014 when Ross, a champion equestrian vaulter turned screenwriter, began working at Gibson's production company, Iconic Productions.
Despite a 34-year age gap that often made headlines, the two remained a steady fixture in each other’s lives for nine years. They welcomed their son, Lars Gerard Gibson, in January 2017.
Sources close to the former couple say their "deep platonic bond" remains strong and they are committed to a healthy co-parenting relationship for their 8-year-old.
A year of hardship
The timeline of their secret split coincides with a major personal tragedy. In January 2025, the family lost their longtime Malibu mansion to the devastating Los Angeles wildfires.
While Gibson was away working at the time, Ross and Lars were safely evacuated.
In interviews following the fire, Gibson reflected on the loss of "irreplaceable" personal items but expressed deep gratitude that his family was unharmed.
Despite the split, both Gibson and Ross are staying busy with high-profile projects. Gibson is currently deep in production for the highly anticipated sequel "The Resurrection of the Christ" part one and two, expected in 2027, and Ross is continuing her rise as a director.
Following the success of "Father Stu"(2022), she is set to direct the upcoming drama "God of the Rodeo", starring Shia LaBeouf.
The pair made their final major public appearance together with their children in late 2024. Lars is the youngest of Gibson’s nine children.
Gibson shares seven children with his first wife, Robyn Moore (married 1980–2011), and a 16-year-old daughter, Lucia, with former partner Oksana Grigorieva.
