It's that time of year again: children are returning to school, with some experiencing primary school or high school for the very first time.

And naturally, it makes the rest of us pause and reflect on our own back-to-school days, the nerves, the excitement, and all the lessons we didn’t realise we were learning.

Former "Idols SA" winner Elvis Blue found himself reflecting on exactly that while sitting on the pavilion at his old school.

“I remembered something from when I was at school, which I wish I had discovered back then but only realised afterwards,” he says.

Most of us have probably been told at some point to “just be yourself”, but he has a slightly different take: “Choose who you are going to be.”

“I say this because if I’m just myself, then I can be lazy. If I’m just myself, then I’m not always a good friend. If I let it be, just ‘myself,’ then it’s not always a good idea,” he explains.

The "Lighthouse" singer urges us to adopt the same perspective for 2026: "Choose who you are going to be."

And he wraps it up beautifully in his caption, reminding us that while life throws a lot of things beyond our control, we still have choices.

“There are many things in life beyond your control, but remember that you also have choices. So choose a few beautiful things.”

It’s simple: how we decide to act, how we show up, and who we allow ourselves to become is something we can choose every single day.

In other news, celebs like Nonku Williams are showing off their back school moments. #

Williams took to Instagram: "Family table’s shrinking, but the love stays huge. With my son off to boarding school and Nothile heading to varsity soon, it’s just me and my last-born now and meals for two that still feel like home.

"Cooking smaller, but still full of flavour and feeling.❤️"

Singer and radio presenter Chad Saaiman, father of three, reflected on how quickly time passes, remembering when his eldest daughter attended her first day of school in 2017, and how she’s grown since then.

Yolanda Mvelase, entrepreneur, influencer, and mother of two, also shared her back-to-school moment.

She shared on her Instagram story "First Lunchbox of 2026", and it looks yummy.

As the new chapters begin, maybe the real lesson isn’t about homework or uniforms, it’s about intentionality.

About choosing kindness, effort, focus and the version of ourselves we actually want to show the world.
