The news of the cancellation of streaming service Showmax sent shockwaves across South Africa, with subscribers in panic about where they would watch their favourite shows.
Multichoice, a Canal+ company, announced in early March that Showmax would be coming to an end, with updates to follow.
Showmax has now revealed the first update on their new chapter and that viewers' favourite shows will be “getting a shiny new home on DStv Stream”.
This decision follows the trend of Showmax broadcasting shows on Mzansi Magic. Some shows are airing first on the streaming platform, then on the DStv channel or vice versa.
“Over the next few months, we’ll be saying goodbye to the standalone Showmax service as we bring the best of Showmax Originals and more onto DStv Stream,” read the update.
Showmax subscribers have until March 31, 2026, to renew their subscription or redeem vouchers. As of April 1, 2026, new subscriptions and renewals will no longer be available.
Subscribers can watch on Showmax as per usual until your subscription ends, or until the end of April 2026. However, no date has been provided yet as to when the streaming service will cease to exist.
In a statement, it was explained that the decision to end Showmax reflected MultiChoice, a CANAL+ Company's continued focus on financial discipline and investment optimisation in an increasingly competitive and capital-intensive global streaming environment.
They further added that the move comes as part of the plan to deploy its in-house large-scale streaming platform capable of meeting the expectations of African and international consumers.
