Niall Horan has released an emotional new single titled "End of an Era" in tribute to his late One Direction bandmate, Liam Payne.

The track arrives ahead of Horan’s upcoming album “Dinner Party", which is set for release on June 5.

In the opening verse, Horan reflects on loss, memories and growing older. He sings about time moving too quickly and not getting the chance to say goodbye. The lyrics revisit the carefree years he shared with Payne during their time in One Direction.

“Careless times, yeah, we sure had some. Naive eyes, yeah, we sure looked young,” Horan sings before leading into the chorus: “Feels like letting go of things we’re not supposed to. One breath and it’s over. The end of an era.”

The song was written by Horan alongside longtime collaborators John Ryan and Julian Bunetta, who also worked closely with One Direction across the group’s final three albums. Their return to the studio together helped shape a track rooted in memory and reflection.

Although “End of an Era” appears on “Dinner Party", Horan decided to release it early so that fans could fully absorb its meaning before the album launch.

“Some songs take a minute to get to what you’re actually trying to say. This one was one of those,” Horan shared on social media.

“I hope it means as much to you as it does to me. I felt it needed its own space before the album comes out in a few weeks.”

The song’s release comes nearly two years after Payne’s death in October 2024 at the age of 31, following a fall from a hotel balcony. His passing deeply affected both fans around the world and the artists who worked closely with him.

Despite the sadness surrounding the loss, Horan explained that the song was written from a place of gratitude and celebration, rather than pain.

Speaking to “Rolling Stone”, he said that the memories he holds from his years with Payne are largely joyful.

“At the end of the day, all of my memories are happy,” Horan said.

“We were talking about it when we were writing it. All of our memories are traveling the world, messing around, having fun and being teenagers. I don’t have negative memories.”

He added that writing the song felt freeing.

“The first verse is quite sad, but then it’s like, ‘Remember all the good times we had.’ It’s got a bit of both in it,” he explained.

Fans have responded emotionally to the release, with many praising Horan for capturing both grief and nostalgia in the song.

One fan wrote: “Nothing prepares you for hearing one of your biggest idols write a song about losing another one of your biggest idols. Thank you for putting so much love and emotion into this song.”

Another shared: “‘End Of An Era’ is so emotional. It’s in my head all day. Sending you so much love and hugs.”

A third fan added: “I’ve loved you since 2012, and I think this album will still be wonderful.”
